The Delisle scale was invented in 1732 by Joseph-Nicolas Delisle, a French astronomer. He used a mercury thermometer and measured the constraction of the fluid from the temperature of boiling water that was chosen as the zero point.

In 1738, Josias Weitbrecht, a german professor of anatomy, recalibrated the scale, keeping zero for the boiling point of water and adding 150 for the freezing point.

The Delisle scale is therefore inverted, a warmer temperature will have a lower value in degree Delisle.
